Intel may have taken its time to deliver its dual-core Xeon processors to market but they have had a major impact on the server market. This is particularly evident at the entry level as you can now pick up a reasonably powerful system at a very tempting price. Dell’s new PowerEdge SC440 is a prime example as the system on review came equipped with the latest 2.4GHz dual-core Xeon 3060, some good storage prospects and a price tag the right side of four figures. |

There's a certain irony that after so many years of getting consumers to obsess about GHz, Intel’s done a pretty good job of re-educating consumers that it’s now Cores, not clock speed, that matter. The result is that people want its latest and greatest CPU, the quad-core Kentsfield, officially dubbed the Core 2 Extreme QX6700, even if they don't really need it. |

Shuttle has done an outstanding job of improving its brand awareness over the past few years. Since launching one of the first SFF (Small Form Factor) machines, the name is now interchanged in the same way a Vacuum Cleaner is often referred to as a Hoover. This is most likely helped along, by the fact “Shuttle” is a hell of a lot easier to say than “Small Form Factor PC” or even “SFF”. |

Hi-Grade is one of the few independent PC companies surviving from the 80s. Like others of its ilk, Hi-Grade has been making and designing Media Center systems since the outset of the platform. Last year Riyad looked at its DMS II and while he was reasonably impressed he did have issues with the way it looked. This new DMS Extreme system will have its work cut out in that regard with the Sony Media Center I looked at recently easily taking the plaudits as one of the best looking media systems I've seen. |

As designers of the original PC platform, IBM must be able to look at the market today and be proud of what it has managed to spark off. There are more IBM PC compatibles out there than it originally thought possible. |

Despite spending most of my week fiddling the latest and greatest hardware, my office machine is actually decidedly ordinary, with a single core 3GHz P4, an 80GB hard drive and 2GB of system memory. Considering I only use it for e-mail, word processing and watching the occasional video, it's not surprising. This machine will do pretty much anything I throw at it, possibly helped by the fact I'm running Fedora Linux, but probably not. |

As Wil described in his piece yesterday, the PC has come a long way from the bland, corporate box that it used to be in the early nineties. Nowaday, even cheap, cheerful machines are attractively coloured and housed in interesting boxes. If you go high-end however, you can get something really cool looking like the Dell XPS 700 or pretty much anything from Alienware. Alienware as a company has a reputation for gaming PCs that sits some way above the regular component manufacturers such as Evesham, but below the super exclusive exotica of the likes of VoodooPC. An Alienware is impressive without being too over-the-top. That said, they tend not to be inexpensive beasts. The last time I looked at one of its machines, I started off quite enthused but was gradually ground down by the sheer cost of nearly £4,000 and some poor assembly choices. |

This week sees the release of Blu-ray, the first of the next generation high definition optical discs formats to hit the UK. The format is most closely associated with Sony, but the first dedicated drive is actually available from Samsung. Sony is not ignoring the launch of its own format however. We've already looked at the impressive Vaio VGN-AR21S notebook that features an integrated Blu-ray drive and now Sony has put another Blu-ray notebook drive into it's latest desktop Media Center system - the VGX-XL202. This is essentially the same as the VGX-XL201 but with the addition of twice the hard disc capacity, a slightly faster CPU and the Blu-ray drive, for which you'll pay an extra £800 – a hefty additional sum. |
