Last week, we built an AMD Spider platform (which, by definition, consists of an ATI 7-series chipset motherboard, a Phenom CPU, and an ATI Radeon 3000 series graphics card). For the fun of it, we overclocked the Phenom 9600 CPU—and found that performance-wise, it barely scaled at all. |

We have seen this method of accelerating "single-card" graphics performance before—you take two mid-range graphics chips and stuff them together into one double-wide card that fits into a single slot. It goes all the way back to ATI's old Rage Fury Maxx, actually. More recently, there were cards like the GeForce 7950 GX2, and even ATI's own Radeon HD 2600 X2, which didn't really do too well. |

Dual-monitor setups have been proven to increase productivity (as much as productivity can be proven, anyway). To that end, most graphics cards—even the cheap ones—have a pair of monitor outputs and all sorts of good software features for using two monitors at once. What do you do if two isn't enough, though? |

To that end, most graphics cards—even the cheap ones—have a pair of monitor outputs and all sorts of good software features for using two monitors at once. What do you do if two isn't enough, though? The kings of "lots of monitor outputs," Matrox, released a product that would use one monitor output to drive three displays. |

Last week we took a look at the first of several cards based on AMD's new RV670 graphics chip. This little wonderchip definitely gets ATI, the graphics division of AMD, back up in Nvidia's face. Built on a 55nm manufacturing process and weighing in at just under 200mm2, it's small and affordable. Most importantly, it's fully featured and fast (for the price). Of course, it's not going to be an instant slam-dunk for AMD. The GeForce 8800 GT is a fantastic card, offering incredible bang-for-the-buck. |

This last year hasn't been too kind to AMD (formerly ATI). The AMD-ATI acquisition has produced minimal concrete results. The R600 GPU was delayed nearly half a year before finally seeing the light of day as the Radeon HD 2900. When it finally dropped, it offered pretty good performance for its $400 price point, but was plagued with other problems, chief among them an unprecedented power draw. The cooling system was almost unbearably loud and the wait for driver optimizations on key titles damaged first impressions. |

For the past year or so, gamers have been in a tough spot. There have been options for those who want decent DirectX 9 performance, but newer games are more demanding and some of the affordable cards in the sub-$300 price range aren't delivering great experiences anymore. Then there's DirectX 10. DX10 games are finally starting to show up in force, and the newest ones like Crysis and Hellgate: London show marked improvements over the DX9 mode. |

It's that time of year again. Autumn in the northern hemisphere is the time when customers start opening their wallets, and component makers dish out new products in a bid to grab marketshare. Gamers upgrade their systems (or build/buy new ones) in preparation for the flood of fourth-quarter games. |
