Voice chat in online games is everywhere these days. If you have an Xbox 360, it's in literally every game with online multiplayer (and you can voice chat outside of games, just for safe measure). It's in most of the PS3 games with online modes. But PCs started this business back in the days of dial-up modems, and its prominence has only grown since then. |

Have you met Bluetooth Headset man? You know the kind, the guys in middle management that wonder around the office, down the street, on the train, and everywhere they go with a Bluetooth headset strapped to their ear. More often than not they shout into their earpieces, communicating in a bizarre sub-language of acronyms and management slogans. Suffice to say I'm not a fan, and I doubt I'm alone. |

In the late 1990's, when force feedback was a buzzword, the gaming tech market saw an explosion of joysticks and driving wheels featuring the relatively novel technology. It went largely ignored (PC gamers would rather be buried with their keyboards and mice than live long lives with 'game controllers'). |

The best way to communicate in multiplayer games is with voice chat. Console gamers are just starting to discover this, with universal voice chat available on some Xbox games, all Xbox 360 games, and increasingly on more PS3 titles. Meanwhile voice chat has been a staple of PC gaming for nearly a decade. FireTeam included voice chat over dial-up modem connections and even came with a headset in the box—nine years ago. Since then, built-in voice chat has become an increasingly popular free addition to PC games, from Unreal Tournament 2003 five years ago, up to the just-released Lord of the Rings Online. |

Just over a year ago I reviewed the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pro earphones and was, to put it bluntly, blown away by how good they sounded. The super.fi 5 Pros employed a dual driver design, where high and low frequencies were sent to different drivers, offering a full and rich sound, coupled with amazing clarity. |

Hearing protection is a serious matter. If you work (or play) in a loud environment and habitually fail to protect your ears, study after study shows you'll most likely develop hearing loss, and possibly ringing in your ears, at some point in your life. Whether you're working in a factory, using power tools, or participate in other ridiculously loud activities, you need to protect your eardrums. And wouldn't it be nice to listen to your MP3 player—at a normal volume—at the same time? |

In January at CES Shure showed me its new SE line of in-ear, noise isolating earphones and recently I’ve reviewed both the SE420s and the SE310s. The SE420s employed a dual driver design and produced superb sound across a whole range of music. The SE310s were considerably cheaper than the SE420s, but didn’t quite blow me away in the same manner. In fact the problem with the SE310s is that the price wasn’t quite low enough when compared to competing products, like the Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 Pros. But the SE210s that I’m looking at now could well be the best value, high-quality earphones out there. |
