The single biggest complaint that customers have against manufacturers of ink-jet printers and all-in-ones is the cost of consumables. While hardware prices continue to drop, the costs of ink and paper stay pretty much the same and, each year, can well add up to a good proportion of the purchase price of a machine. |

Most colour all-in-one machines are inkjet-based, but there's a growing market for colour laser and LED multi-function devices; one which OKI and wants a part of. Its C3530 MFP device is a colour LED printer with a flatbed scanner mounted on top a design that makes it a full 500mm deep and the best part of that high as well. |

Canon's workgroup colour laser printers now carry the i-SENSYS brand which is, according to the company, designed to save time, minimise energy use and be space efficient. The LBP5360 isn't the smallest colour laser printer we've seen, but it's steeply raked front panel and well-designed controls make it quite good-looking. It falls into sleep mode when unattended, but can still wake almost instantly when it receives a print job. |

The mono office laser printer is still one of HP's core products and the LaserJet P3005x is a fast and versatile member of its latest generation. It comes as standard with duplex capability and two paper trays, each of which can take a full, 500-sheet ream of paper. This means you can set it up with letterheads and follow-on sheets, and still have a multi-purpose tray for special media, such as envelopes. |

If you want a simple but functional laser printer, there are several models under £100, but one of the main players in this market making respectable machines, is Samsung. Its ML-3050 is an entry-level printer, but has several features that you might expect only further up the price-bands. |

If you're sharing a laser printer among all the people in the workgroup, the argument of all printer manufacturers is that high print speed is essential and that speed costs. Kyocera's latest, fast workgroup printer, the FS-400DN, is rated at 45ppm and attracts a price of well over £700, largely because of this. |
