We've been calling it Barcelona or Agena for several months now, but AMD has finally named its next-generation desktop processors; and the new name is Phenom. Not quite as odd sounding as the Athlon was when it was launched, but still very much an AMD product name. The new AMD line up is as follows: |

A quiet AMD isn't a good AMD, but unfortunately it's the AMD we've been left with ever since Intel started becoming more competitive. In fact, the more Intel changed for the better, the more it seemed AMD changed for the worse. Intel started bringing out better product, talking more about its plans for the future, and made a whole lot of sense in just about everything it was doing and saying. Meanwhile, AMD just seemed to freeze up; we got no disclosures of upcoming products, no indication of direction, and very little sign of the hungry, competitive AMD that took Intel on and actually won a bout. |

Following my recent trip to China, courtesy of Intel I was left impressed with the company’s dedication to long term research and blue sky thinking, such as Terascale processing and E-Ink displays. However, I wasn't as convinced when it came to some of the products that it will be releasing in the short term. |

Intel quickly expanded its developer forum to include many stops across the globe, but after recent cost cutting measures it scaled back the number of IDFs down to just three. The Spring IDF, normally held in San Francisco, has instead moved to Beijing, while Fall IDF will take place in SF as usual. |

If you go to school for marketing, there's undoubtedly a lesson about announcing products too early while you still have older inventory to sell. Two weeks ago, Intel unveiled its plans for Penryn and Nehalem, the successors to Conroe, in the most forward looking disclosure we've ever seen from the company. We couldn't be happier with the way Intel has been handling itself ever since the demise of NetBurst and the Pentium 4, but admittedly it's incredibly difficult to get excited about a Kentsfield speed bump in the interim. |

The news here isn't that Intel is releasing a higher-clock-rate version of the quad-core Core 2 processor. Anyone who's gotten their hands on the previous Core 2 Extreme QX6700 knows that pushing it to 3.2GHz is almost commonplace. If Gateway and Dell can ship overclocked systems in volume, then the CPU clearly has some headroom. So Intel's shipping and supporting the new QX6800 version of its quad-core CPU at 2.93GHz is almost a yawner. |

It wasn’t too long ago that Intel announced its next generation processors based on the 45nm process back at the end of January. Now, just two months later we’ve managed to secure an update on how this new process will feature in Intel’s future Penryn and Nehalem CPUs, while Intel also let slip some future developments in its architecture that surprised even us. |
