The hidden assumptions in that seemingly straightforward piece of advice are the killer, though. The words fastest, afford, and needs are too general for this to be really useful advice. |

The AMD 690G/690V chipset was officially launched about a week ago. This is AMD's first integrated graphics platform and in our initial testing proved to be a serious competitor to the NVIDIA 6100 series and the Intel G965 in video performance. We have had a little extra time to work with the chipset and feel confident enough in the chipset and drivers to publish our first performance results today. While our initial results will concentrate on video, media, and audio application performance from a chipset level, we will be looking in-depth at each 690G board in our upcoming mATX roundup that features over ten boards from four different chipset suppliers. |

It has been awhile since we have had the opportunity to review an AMD chipset. The last chipset produced by AMD was the 8000 series that was born out of necessity for the launch of the Opteron series of processors back in 2002. Before that, AMD had produced some unique chipsets for the Athlon and Duron processors series that included the AMD-750 that was quickly updated to the AMD-760 after a rough launch. Our favorite AMD chipset was the AMD-760 MPX that provided an affordable multi-processor platform when paired with the Athlon MP processors. In fact, we still have an MSI based 760 MPX system running in the labs today as a media back-up server. |

AMD's latest Athlon 64 X2 6000+ runs at 3.0GHz, while Intel's fastest Core 2 Extreme Edition tops out at 2.93GHz. Talk about a turnabout. To be fair, Intel is still shipping higher-clocked Pentium 4 and Pentium D processors, but few people pay attention to those, nor do most users want one. |
