It's been a rough road for the Intel Xeon since AMD introduced the Opteron. AMD's market share is climbing, and in a complete role reversal of years gone by, AMD is reported to have 81.5% of the US retail PC market with Intel sitting at 18.5%. In the server space (lower volume, higher profit) AMD is now sitting at over 14%, up 5% from 2004. There is no question that the fight is fierce between the two processor giants: recently AMD hired one of Intel's high ranking Itanium designers. |

Intel has traditionally offered a wide range of ‘white box’ server solutions and one of its biggest fans has always been Evesham Technology. The latest SilverEDGE 300NH represents a slight departure from this philosophy as although it uses Intel’s entry level Server Board SE7230NH1-E, Evesham has opted for an Enlight SR5032 chassis instead of Intel’s SC5295UP. The 300NH comes equipped with a Pentium D processor, which is proving to be a top choice for this type of application. It offers small businesses that are looking for their first server more than enough power for basic file and print sharing and email and web services but doesn’t incur the premium commanded by dual Xeon servers. |

The Pentium 4 processor may be aimed primarily at PCs and workstations but it’s made a significant impact over the past couple of years in the entry-level server market as well. Small businesses looking for a simple solution for handling file and print services plus email and web serving don’t want to pay a premium for Xeon-based systems. At this level the P4 has carved more than a niche for itself as it offers a cost-effective alternative with more than enough power to handle these types of tasks. It stands to reason that Intel’s dual-core Pentium D is an ideal candidate for the very same applications and the Armari DC945G Server on review is a prime example as it delivers two processors close to the price of one. |

Over the years, we've had various hardware setups for the staging server at AnandTech. For the most part, it had been running off my personal web server, since ColdFusion is quite easy to develop from anywhere because of its scripting language roots. For the new .NET architechture for AnandTech, I performed all development on my local machine due to the simplicity of local debugging with Visual Studio .NET (it's geared for local host development, especially debugging). The problem that I ran into is mostly a limitation of Windows XP - its limit of 1 website. That is, you can only create one website in Windows XP's IIS. There are a few hacks out there to work with multiple projects or websites, like IIS Multiplex, but none of these available hacks or work-arounds can really replace an unrestricted version of IIS.
