Niagara: A Torrent of Threads

	For the server market, Sun is effectively betting the farm on what they call "Throughput Computing" or Chip Multi-Threading (CMT), more traditionally known as Thread Level Parallelism, or TLP. They expect heavily TLP optimised designs to provide a significant competitive advantage. First up is Niagara in early 2006, which is the main focus of this article. The chip design is almost complete and is expected to tape-out in Q2 2004.

Review: Mirra Personal Server

	The sheer volume of our personal data is exploding. Digital photography, music, video, and games gobble up hard drive space like Cookie Monster set loose in Mrs. Fields. As we load up our home systems with more storage-consuming media, the value of that media becomes greater than the dollar cost of the underlying hardware. It's one thing to have a box of unsorted family photos sitting in your bookcase. It's quite another to have all those photos on your home PC – and then suffer a drive crash.

Ace's Server Guide: Dual Xeon, Dual Opteron and Quad Opteron

	In our last article about x86 server CPUs, the Opteron 244 made a quite an impression when compared to the Xeon DP. In many of our real-world server benchmarks, the 1.8 GHz Opteron bested the 2.8 GHz Xeon DP. Of course, neither Intel nor AMD have been sitting still since that time, and to make the Xeon DP more competitive, Intel equipped its midrange server CPU with a 1 MB L3-cache. Correspondingly, 2.2 GHz Opteron 248 and 848 processors are available this month. This article serves as an update on how these server platforms compare, but it's also much more. We've benchmarked AMD's Quartet, a four-headed Opteron hydra with up to 8.8 GHz (4 x 2.2 GHz) of processing power. Unfortunately, the quad Xeon MP was not yet able to join the party, but rest assured that this is not our last server CPU article.

I was going to wait until we got a modern Xeon Rack server in the test lab, but as so many of our readers were interested in the Opteron's power dissipation, I decided to write up a short article on Newisys' system management, most focusing on the Opteron's power dissipation.

Scaling Server Performance

	When our Hitchhiker's Guide to the Mainframe article caught the attention of Slashdot last month, quite a few people were curious to know about how our server handled the traffic. This is a topic we have discussed previously in Building a Better Webserver in the 21st Century and SPECmine - A Case Study on Optimization, but since there was so much interest in some more in-depth information on the topic, I decided to spend some time explaining how the data object caching in our web application can do so much for performance without sacrificing the ability to serve true dynamic content. I'll start with some statistics gathered on December 4th.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Mainframe

	In this article I will provide a brief history of the mainframe, with an emphasis on features that make a mainframe unique. I will not attempt to cover the architecture in any technical detail at this time; the intent is simply to set the stage for future articles. If you are in fact an experienced mainframe user then this article probably has no particular value for you, other than possible amusement. I will assume that the reader is familiar with general computer concepts and technologies, and will present the information in terms that should be familiar to PC or Unix geeks.
