When PC gamers think of titles that stress graphics cards, they typically think of first person shooters. And for good reason—most of the most graphically intense games over the years have been FPS games. Lately, that has started to change. Company of Heroes, in addition to being a brilliant game in general, showcased graphics on par with the best first-person corridor runners out there. A later patch made it one of the first games to support DirectX 10, securing its place as truly bleeding edge. |

When we think of 3D games this fall that push the graphics envelope, we mostly think of games that strive for a more realistic look like Crysis or Unreal Tournament 3. Valve's multiplayer shooter Team Fortress 2, believe it or not, features some very sophisticated graphics technology. It scales very well to low-end machines, but those with lots of graphics muscle will enjoy better lighting and shaders, motion blur, high dynamic range lighting, and more. |

We weren't too kind in our initial review of the Ageia PhysX physics accelerator in May of last year. At almost $300, it was expensive, and from what we could tell, it didn't do much of anything. One of the first supporting games was Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, and the additional physics interactions displayed were definitely underwhelming. Not to mention, adding the PhysX card didn't improve performance much. |

It looks like the DirectX 10 floodgates are ever so slowly starting to creak open. First, there was the public demo of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which came in both DX9 and DX10 variants. That was a major letdown. Not only does it basically not work at all on ATI's DX10 cards, it runs terribly slowly on Nvidia's without looking any better than the DX9 version. Hey, it's just a demo of an unreleased game, so there's still hope for really dramatic improvements before release. |

Despite Nintendo selling enough Wii consoles to guarantee a near permanent worldwide shortage, even Wii owners such as myself maintain a semi-conscious wariness about the console. It's easy to appreciate the revolutionary controls, the elegant design and sheer chutzpah of Nintendo to create such a thing. But, since its release, the widely predicted post-launch games shortage has come to fruition. A combination of caution and intransigence from many publishers and developers has meant that only now, with the Wii confirmed as a resounding retail success, has meaningful development begun. |

Let’s face it – Microsoft has been asking for the critical beating that the PC version of Halo 2 has received. It’s taken nearly five years to convert the game, the ‘Vista Only’ restriction seems like a marketing requirement rather than a technical necessity, and the decision to link it to an online games service (where PC owners pay an annual £40 charge for facilities they normally expect for free) is disastrous. |

It looks like DirectX 10 is finally starting to trickle into our PCs, only five months after the release of Windows Vista and seven months after the release of the first DX10-capable graphics card. The delay is a bit disappointing, but not entirely surprising. We recently previewed the demo for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which comes in both DX9 and DX10 versions. |
