Few would argue that when it comes to console based driving epics, Polyphony’s Gran Turismo series sits head and shoulders above the competition. In fact, Gran Turismo was always such a triumph of accurate racing dynamics and beautifully rendered automotive pornography, that it wasn’t until after Gran Turismo 4 had launched that anything resembling a worthy opponent appeared. That game was Forza Motorsport, and it finally gave Xbox owners a retort, when their PS2 owning mates threw GT4 in their face. |

Back in 1989 FASA corporation designed a new tabletop RPG, Shadowrun, that married the trendy tech-noir of cyberpunk with the usual tropes of Dungeons and Dragons. This was something of a cult hit, and in 1993 Nintendo released an isometric action RPG based on the game. Thanks to a compelling storyline and some decent game mechanics, this in turn won cult classic status, and is still widely and fondly remembered today. |

Before last year, who would have thought that Lara’s ten year anniversary would have been worth celebrating? After the uninspired sequels, the movies and the whole Angel of Darkness debacle, it was getting hard to remember what an important game that first Tomb Raider was. Along with Quake and Super Mario 64, it virtually laid down the foundations for true 3D gaming. While its ridiculously well-endowed heroine got all the headlines, Tomb Raider’s biggest assets were actually its groundbreaking graphics and its understanding of the potential of 3D space. Like iD and Nintendo, Core Design realised that 3D could produce awe-inspiring environments, rich in opportunity for daring deeds. More than any other company, Core also understood the cinematic potential of the technology. Who can forget Tomb Raider’s legendary set-pieces? That first swan-dive down the waterfall? That moment when the mighty T-Rex bursts onto the scene? |

We all love Wii; it’s impossible not to. It’s the console that has put simple, stupid fun back on the map. It has given us a much needed rest from endless tales of chunky marines wielding chunkier weapons against alien scum in gloomy, alien locations, and brought back the idea of sitting around the telly playing games that your sister, your dad – heck, your grandma – could enjoy. But much as we love it, we can’t help but feel that a subtle scent of disappointment is beginning to cloud the air. |

It has begun. Halo has landed and Xbox 360 owners have mobilised, intent on dissecting every detail. Having wowed the crowds at E3 with an explosive in-game cinematic, tantalised with tidbits and generally frustrated the hell out of everyone expectations are inevitably high. When are they not? |

Relax, Metal Gear fans – there’s no need to be nervous. It’s all here this time. Unlike the two oddball Metal Gear Acid games, the first real Metal Gear on PSP has everything you might expect from a Metal Gear Solid. Third-person sneaking? Twisting and slightly bewildering storyline? Snake as the main character? Striking boss characters with distinctive peculiarities? Brilliant cut scenes? Gratuitous cleavage shot? Slightly silly in-jokes? All here, and just as you might expect. |

I remember going to see the first Spider-Man movie at the cinema, and the feeling of relief when I realised that Sam Raimi and his team really ‘got’ what made the character work. Watching the transformation from Puny Parker to high-swinging, acrobatic webhead, a CGI Spidey swinging and slaloming through the obstacles cluttering New York’s urban jungle, I could feel the thrill of seeing what my younger, comic-nerd self had imagined when I’d read the classic marvel strips as a kid. Spider-Man the movie had it down. |

This is what we feared: a crap World of Warcraft clone with hairy hobbit feet; a superficial theme park trip through Tolkien’s Middle Earth; another lifeless, old-school MMO relying on the fantasy world’s biggest license for mass appeal; a game that fails to do justice to either Lord of the Rings or Turbine’s heritage as a world-class MMO developer. |
