To say that God of War’s creator, David Jaffe, thinks big might be the understatement of the year. His 2005 Greek myth epic seemed purposefully designed to confound your expectations, not just of what you could do and show in an action game, but of what you could do and show with the ageing PS2 hardware. At a time when Microsoft’s Xbox was making the PS2 look old and tired, and with the next-generation of hardware waiting in the wings, God of War proved that the little black console still had the power to amaze. As one man fought his way through hordes of foes and battled monstrous beasts, then scaled vast buildings sat atop a Titan’s back, you could practically hear jaws dropping around the world. God of War was, without doubt, one of the most phenomenal video games of the last five years. |

The setting might be 70s California, but the setup is classic 40s noir. Hyde, a deadbeat ex-cop turned travelling salesman checks into a ropey desert motel. He’s there to collect a package and pick up a couple of items. While he’s there, he finds evidence that links the motel to his old partner: a cop gone bad who betrayed him then mysteriously disappeared. As Hyde looks for further clues he learns things that entangle him in the lives of the staff and other guests – a weird ensemble of ex-cons, writers, drunks, ladies and losers. In the Hotel Dusk, everyone has a secret, and everything is connected if you just know how to join the dots… |

It’s probably worth pointing out that I’m a cricket fanatic. Not the sort that started loving cricket after England won The Ashes, but the sort who has loved and played the game since youth. Consequently when a videogame on the sport comes along, it's always of interest. |

It says something about an expansion pack that its biggest defect is a bug affecting those who put between 50 and 120 hours into it. Clearly, this is a bit of a disaster for those planning to kick off The Shivering Isles then return to the land of Cyrodil and complete every quest and side-quest going, but think about it – how many full games are there where you would want to put that sort of time in? Now try and think of another expansion pack that offers that much gameplay. Many? I don’t think so. |

The problem with the vast majority of PlayStation 3 launch titles is that they’ve been around for a while on other platforms. But Sega decided to coincide two of its major releases with the UK PS3 launch – one was Virtua Fighter 5 which we reviewed last week and the other is Virtua Tennis 3, which I’m looking at right now. |

Perhaps it’s a mistake to say that Command and Conquer invented the real-time-strategy genre – its developer, Westwood, had already done that with Dune 2 – but it was certainly the game that popularised it. With C&C, Westwood both simplified and sped up the wargame, creating something with the pace, the glossy visuals and the narrative hooks to snare the action-gaming crowd, but with a streamlined tactical element that still appealed to the armchair generals. C&C was straightforward, fast, violent and fun. It has become a legend that just one tactic – the classic ‘tank rush’ strategy – was enough to see you through the game, but that didn’t make it any the less enjoyable. |

Don’t worry – I’m not talking about David Cameron and his next-generation Tories, but about Sega and its next-generation fighting game. Barring the staggering PS3-powered visuals (more on them later), Virtua Fighter 5 might not appear to be a huge move on from Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, or indeed, Virtua Fighter 4 itself. As Virtua Fighter 4 was in itself something of a step back from Virtua Fighter 3, whose more expansive, undulating stages and dodging mechanics now look like a failed experiment, this means that we’re effectively looking at a series that has stayed pretty much true to the template laid out in its first iteration, nearly fourteen years ago. After Dead or Alive 4 and its sprawling, multi-level arenas or Tekken 5 with its frankly ludicrous cast of characters, it’s almost disappointing that such a flagship title for the beat ‘em up genre does so little to move that genre on. |

To borrow from Jane Austen, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a new console in possession of ground-breaking hardware must be in want of a killer game to show it off. This game doesn’t need to be perfect, nor does it need to be revolutionary (though in some cases both are true). It simply has to show the potential of the new machine, and make anyone who sees it or plays it want to buy one. The original Playstation had Ridge Racer, the Nintendo 64 had Mario. The Xbox had Halo, the 360, Call of Duty 2 and Project Gotham 3, and the Wii had Wii Sports (and to a lesser extent, Zelda). The Playstation 3 has several contenders, but only one with the impact and appeal to do the job. Unless you’re a) blind or b) completely and utterly adverse to racing games of any form, Motorstorm will make you want a PS3. |
