TV Tuners are becoming more and more popular as home theaters and computers start to merge. Already, many countries outside the US are making the move to integrated computer and home theater/entertainment centers in their homes instead of separate components, particularly in parts of Asia where space is limited. Of course, many people in the US are also beginning to see the benefits of combining their TVs and computers into one unit, and it seems reasonable to predict that this will be the norm in the near future. |

Great sporting events, such as this June's World Cup, are viewed the world over as an incredible opportunity for success and I’m not just talking about the players. Anyone who sells just about anything is trying to flog products off the back on the world’s most watch sporting event. Let’s fact it, with a total audience of 30 million viewers for the 2002 World Cup, they’d be foolish not to. |

It seems that now more than ever people are using their computers for a much wider variety of applications than in the past. For example, home theater systems are being centered more around computers now because of the versatility these systems offer. The level of quality being offered with computer home theaters is approaching - and in some cases surpassing - that of stand-alone components, and having one at the center of a home theater setup is looking more and more attractive for many users. |

Most of our readers have probably used a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) device at some point in time. TiVo was the first such device to gain mainstream recognition, but in reality, PC owners have been able to do most of what TiVo offered for a long time. ATI's All-In-Wonder line has had TV-In capability since the days of the old ATI Expert line with Rage graphics chips. Of course, the ability to do something like watch or record TV on a PC is not the same as the ability to do that well, and thankfully, we've made some serious progress in that area over the past decade. Our last TV tuner card roundup is almost six months old, and while much of the information is still current, we do have some new cards some might be considering. |

If you’re considering building a Media Centre PC, either based on Windows Media Center or a third party interface, your TV tuner will be an important component. TV is the most popular medium in the home and if you’re going for digital terrestrial TV, popularised as Freeview, it will also include all your radio stations. |

There have always been TV tuner cards for PCs but it’s fair to say that Microsoft’s Windows Media Center operating system has given them a new lease of life, so much so that if a card isn’t MCE compatible, it’s hardly worth mentioning. |

In an increasingly mobile world portability is everything: phones, notebooks. PDAs, projectors, even routers. As a consequence, anything that works with these devices must be equally teeny or be obliterated by the competition. This is particularly true of notebook cardbus TV tuners where we want the functionality and quality of a high end set without, quite frankly, the size of a high end set. As always, the technology has arrived, the sector has become competitive and its time to put of couple of brands to the test. Head on, mano a mano, two cards enter one card leaves (gotta love Tina Tuner in Thunderdome!). |

I am a big fan of digital television. What is actually broadcast on it is an entirely different matter, but as far as technology goes it is a major step forward for the TV viewing world. Poor picture quality and scratchy sound are consigned to history or to those poor mites still squinting in front of analogue signals. Digital TV also creates the opportunity for far more channels than its wilting predecessor could ever have hoped for, and while most are not worth wasting a minute of your life on, the key word here is “choice”. So with the same wilful enthusiasm, I was keen to take a look at Chaintech’s digital TV tuner card. |
