It's really hard to get excited about a keyboard, it's got to be one of the most boring aspects of any PC. In reality though, it's probably one of the most important components and we seldom give it more than five minutes thought. After all, you're going to be using it for most of the input in to your machine, and definitely all of your typing. |

The PC wasn't originally designed for games. Neither the keyboard or mouse has ever had games in mind. In fact, the QWERTY layout we use today was designed for use on typewriters with the sole intention of stopping keys from jamming up. Unbeknown to most, there is another standard called Dvorak, which is apparently more efficient and lowers RSI risk. Yet we still stick with what we know – change is a hard thing to implement. |

When it comes to input devices, we at ExtremeTech tend to gravitate towards the funky. Oddball keyboards like the joystick keyboard and the DAS keyboard aren't really for the casual or average typist. And then there's your hybrid WASD keyboards like the Wolf Claw and the MERC that proclaim "Hey, I'm a gamer!" Not to mention all the funky, usually ergonomic mice we've covered. |

We were all once, or still are, beginners with the keyboard or typewriter. Jokingly referred to as "hunt and peckers," we earned each sentence we typed--two fingers at a time, frustration included. And what can be even more frustrating than hunting for letters on a keyboard when even the keys have no characters printed on them? |

Ideazon made a big splash in the gaming community when it released the Zboard, a keyboard that allowed users to insert custom key sets for use with popular game titles. This was great for gamers who couldn't stand playing their favorite games on a regular keyboard, but it was also an inconvenience because you had to remove and install a different key set when you wanted to play another game, or just to type. |

However, many of these new fancy keyboards seem to have missed out a key point of what you use a keyboard for – typing. In order to use a keyboard comfortably for a long period of time, you need good key travel and keys that are sized and weighted well. This isn’t always the case with these new slim and sleek keyboards. |
