The latest fad in the surveillance market is being able to keep an eye on your home and property from a mobile phone or PDA. We’ve seen some proprietary solutions garnering a fair amount of interest and D-Link now steps in with its Securicam DCS-2120 IP camera. Taking over from the DCS-2100G it offers support for wired and wireless network connections and the RTSP (real time streaming protocol). For mobiles and PDAs to access and view the camera’s video stream they’ll need to have a 3G video playback utility such as RealPlayer or PacketVideo installed. |

Panasonic’s range of IP cameras just keeps on growing and the latest to join this burgeoning family delivers a range of useful surveillance features including remote pan, tilt and zoom capabilities. The BB-HCM381 also compares very well on price with the competition, with [linkouthttp://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2297 Sony’s SNC-RZ25P], for example, delivering a similar feature set but costing around £100 more. |

One of the fiddlier things about webcam conversations on most PCs is that you have to set up the webcam and the audio separately. While most notebooks have a microphone built-in, PCs do not, which means you have to use an often poor desktop stand microphone, or a headset, which can be restrictive, clumsy and messes with your hair. |

The wireless IP camera makes so much sense and yet it’s quite surprising how few vendors have taken wire-free surveillance seriously. Axis is one of very few and started on this road a couple of years ago with its 206W which took a standard 206 and added an 802.11b wireless card. A great idea but ultimately flawed as a single 206W running at its maximum frame rate could soak up as much as a third of available bandwidth. |

For indoor network surveillance there is a plethora of camera choices and over the past few months we’ve looked at a range of options from all the big players including Axis, Sony, Panasonic and D-Link. However, move up to outdoor surveillance and you’ll see a dramatic reduction in those choices and a commensurate increase in costs. With the launch of its latest 225FD, Axis aims to change the landscape as this fixed dome camera is one tough cookie that looks capable of handling pretty much anything you can (literally) throw at it.
There’s no lightweight plastic chassis here - the 225FD is housed in very solid metal that’s built to be vandal resistant and weather proof. |

Panasonic’s recent move into the consumer IP network surveillance market has met with considerable success thanks to its diminutive BL-C10 and BB-HCM311, delivering a fine range of features for the price. We now move up to its professional products and take a look at the WV-NP472E, which delivers some interesting alternatives albeit with a substantial price hike. |
